What is Shape Your Life (SYL)? — SYL provides women and trans survivors of violence with an opportunity to participate in a recreational boxing program. SYL is about feeling strong, having fun and trying something new! Physical exercise, reducing social isolation, exploring healthy aggression and expressing anger in a safe place can help survivors heal from violence and regain control over their lives. The SYL boxing classes are designed for beginners and are held at the Toronto Newsgirls Boxing Club once a week. Each class is two hours long.
This is a free program. Equipment, TTC and free snacks are provided.
The next SYL session for women, trans and genderqueer participants who identify as survivors of violence is: Saturdays, 2:30-4:30 pm. from January 16 to February 20, 2016. Register now!
If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please contact Savoy at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 416.480.2058. Check out what SYL participants have to say about the program by clicking on “Your Words: SYL Participants Talk”.
Check out the Newsgirls’ Zine by Andrea “Grizzly” Clegg:
Andrea Clegg hung out, boxed, and photographed Toronto gym Newsgirls for several years. This zine is a small fraction of her work in a space that inspired and empowered women and transgender folk to live better and fight harder inside and outside the ring.
